A new book looks at how AI is rewiring the newsroom, for better and worse

Nieman Lab reports on a new book examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping journalism. 'Journalism in the Age of AI,' by Rodrigo Zamith, Tomás Dodds, and Seth C. Lewis, argues that while AI can offer newsrooms powerful tools, current approaches are mostly accelerating long-standing problems that have eroded both journalist well-being and public trust. The book draws on concrete examples: at Suncoast Searchlight, a Florida-based nonprofit news organization, editors discovered their editor-in-chief had used AI tools to edit reporter drafts—including instances where the AI generated fake quotes that staffers were unaware of. Meanwhile, larger organizations like BBC News and the Rural News Network are successfully deploying AI for personalization and content distribution, and the Wall Street Journal's Newswires service now uses AI to translate stories into multiple languages. The authors argue that AI in journalism doesn't have to accelerate existing dysfunction—it could instead be a rare opportunity to rebuild the profession around public service rather than just profit.
