Physics World reports that researchers led by geologist Luca Bindi of the University of Florence have identified a brand-new metal alloy formed inside the Hiroshima atomic blast of August sixth, nineteen forty-five. The bomb's fireball, which topped seven thousand degrees Celsius, vaporized building materials, metals and soil into a plasma that condensed into glassy particles known as hiroshimaites, still found on the beaches of Hiroshima Bay today. Within a tiny grain of this material, the team found a homogenous alloy of six metals and silicon with an unusual crystal structure never seen before, the product of a metallic vapor that cooled and solidified so rapidly it froze into a metastable form. Bindi's team, whose findings appear in the journal Science Advances, previously found a quasicrystal in trinitite glass from the 1945 Trinity test in New Mexico.
