New autism therapy shows surprising benefits even in adult mice

Blocking a protein channel called SLC6A20 restored crucial brain signaling and improved social, communication, and repetitive behaviors in mice with autism-related traits, ScienceDaily reports. The approach also worked on human brain tissue grown in the lab. Most notably, the effects persisted in adult mice, suggesting that the brain may remain capable of change longer into adulthood than previously thought.
