APOD: 2026 August 7 – Rubin’s Cosmos Field

NASA's Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile has captured a stunning image of the COSMOS field, revealing more than half a million galaxies in a patch of sky just a few times larger than the full moon. The region was first observed by Hubble and later by Webb, but what makes it special is that it contains comparatively few bright stars from our own galaxy, offering an unimpeded view of distant galaxies beyond the Milky Way. The variety in galaxy shapes and sizes is remarkable, and some of that light has traveled for billions of years to reach Earth. As part of its ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time, Rubin will return to this same field every couple of days, allowing astronomers to watch how the sky changes over time.
