A rocket crashed into the Moon – why this could threaten future lunar bases

On Wednesday, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket's upper stage collided with the Moon after successfully delivering two robotic landers to the surface. The Conversation reports the impact created a crater several meters in diameter, giving scientists an opportunity to study crater formation and lunar surface properties. SpaceX explained that controlled de-orbit maneuvers aren't always possible for lunar missions; in this case, the spent upper stage remained in a high elliptical orbit before its trajectory eventually intersected with the Moon. While no equipment was in the impact zone this time, the incident spotlights a growing concern as more crewed bases are planned for the Moon: space debris could pose a significant hazard to future infrastructure. International law already establishes that nations are liable for damage caused by their space objects—a principle that will become increasingly important as lunar activity accelerates.
