Insole Court in Cardiff, Wales

Atlas Obscura tells the story of Insole Court in Cardiff, Wales — a Gothic revival mansion born from a coal fortune. The Insole family built their wealth in the coal trade starting in the eighteen thirties and constructed their family home near Llandaff Cathedral by the eighteen fifties. As their prosperity grew, so did the mansion: expanded in the eighteen seventies and doubled in size again in nineteen oh six. When coal demand declined, the family sold to Cardiff's city council in nineteen thirty-two. After wartime service as an air raid headquarters and various civic offices, Insole Court nearly vanished when the council considered selling in the late nineteen eighties — but local residents fought to keep it public. Following a Heritage Lottery Fund restoration, the mansion now operates as both heritage site and community hub, with its rooms open for public visits and events.
