Chernobyl’s Robots, or the Hackathon From Hell

When Chernobyl's reactor four exploded in nineteen eighty-six, the blast scattered radioactive core material across the entire site. The response was essentially a crisis hackathon, with teams from the Soviet Union and allied nations racing to design robots for measurement and debris removal. Per Hackaday, the early attempts were rough — the RR-one robot's sensors overstated radiation by more than tenfold, while the RR-two and RR-three proved too top-heavy and tipped over after helicopter deployment. Manual crews turned out to be faster and safer. Eventually, engineers figured out that combustion engines survived radiation far better than batteries. Robots using that principle — including one fashioned from an airport cart with vacuum tubes and relays — proved far more reliable. Bulldozer designs eventually pushed radioactive debris off roofs into containers, massively reducing contamination. The fact that three other reactors at the site kept operating safely, and the zone is now open to tourists, stands as a testament to that improvised engineering effort — with lessons still being applied to decommissioning sites like Fukushima today.
