Judge rules Meta caused "public nuisance" and must fund mental health treatment

A New Mexico judge yesterday ruled that Meta created a public nuisance and ordered the company to pay five hundred sixty-seven million dollars to fund youth mental health treatment. Per Ars Technica, this ruling follows a jury verdict earlier this year that awarded three hundred seventy-five million in civil penalties against Meta for failing to protect children from exploitation and for misleading parents about the safety of its apps. The case, filed by New Mexico's attorney general in twenty twenty-three, alleged Meta's social media platforms — Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — posed documented risks to young users.
