This Filesystem is Born to Fail

Hackaday reports on FailFS, a new Linux kernel feature arriving in version seven point three that inverts how operating systems handle sandboxing. Rather than hiding most of the filesystem from a process, it starts with nothing and lets a sandbox manager explicitly grant access to specific directories and files through file descriptors—meaning applications only see what they're deliberately given. The tradeoff? Running dynamically linked programs becomes challenging, since binaries typically expect system libraries at standard absolute paths. But for building lean, predictable sandboxes, the approach is elegantly simple.
