High divers take the plunge in Paris for a new test of reclaimed Seine’s water

sports

The Guardian reports Paris is staging its first high-diving competition in the Seine River as part of the European Aquatics Championships. Athletes are launching themselves from a twenty-metre platform in front of the Eiffel Tower, testing the city's ambitious effort to reclaim its river for sport. The event exposed fragility in that goal when traces of hydrocarbons were detected upstream Thursday, halting training. The French Swimming Federation confirmed the affected area was treated by Friday, allowing athletes to return and the competition to proceed as planned. High diving concludes Saturday with the final rounds and medal events.
