JI announces Aug 16 sit-ins in provincial capitals to protest petroleum levy

politics

Jamaat-i-Islami announced sit-ins for August sixteenth in all four provincial capitals, seeking to pressure the government into withdrawing the petroleum levy. Per the party's leadership, over five hundred organized protests across Pakistan the previous day demonstrated public opposition to the levy and inflation. Party chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman accused the ruling elite of maintaining privileges—including government aircraft and free fuel—while ordinary citizens face crushing costs. According to Dawn, the Sindh government responded by arguing the petroleum levy is a federal matter and that Jamaat-i-Islami was using the protest for political gain rather than public service.
