Hannah Arendt on Love and How to Live with the Fundamental Fear of Loss

other

Hannah Arendt spent half a century refining a manuscript on love and Saint Augustine—originally her doctoral thesis from 1929, published posthumously. The Marginalian reports that Arendt explored how love begins as craving for specific, temporal goods, but inevitably transforms into fear: the fear of losing what we've gained. She identified a troubling cycle where anxiety about future loss strips each present moment of its peace and meaning. Her conclusion, drawing on Augustine and Stoic philosophy, was that true fearlessness—and thus true love—requires living fully in the present, unshaken by future uncertainties.
