Pierre Bourdieu: habitus
other
Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu had an unsettling question: how free are we, really? According to a new video from Psyche, the answer lies in a concept Bourdieu called 'habitus'—the hidden rules and unspoken patterns that shape how we behave without our conscious knowing. Your taste in music, the way you hold a fork, your instincts about what's appropriate—these aren't entirely your own choices. They're the product of layers of social history and culture absorbed into your very being. In other words, we're all unknowingly playing by rules we never learned. Bourdieu's insight is both liberating and troubling: understanding your own habitus might be the first step toward actual freedom.
