APOD: 2026 August 9 – Contemplating the Sun
science
This week, the Moon will eclipse the Sun for viewers across northeastern North America, Europe, and northwestern Africa. NASA Science reports that a narrow band of totality—stretching from Greenland to Portugal—will experience the complete eclipse. Astronomers are also curious about a potential bonus: whether the Perseid meteor shower, currently peaking, might be visible during totality, creating a rare dual astronomical event.
