Tracking Bees with a Stereo Camera

One engineer decided to build a stereo camera system capable of tracking bees in flight — a task that's easier in theory than practice. Per Hackaday, the project required solving multiple engineering challenges: synchronizing two high-speed cameras, managing the tradeoff between frame rate and resolution, and selecting the right optics for a subject moving faster than most conventional imaging systems can handle. A critical choice was using global shutter sensors instead of rolling shutters, which would distort the image with the so-called jello effect. Global shutters capture all pixels at once, eliminating timing uncertainty — important when you're trying to photograph something this small and fast. The prototype isn't producing bee footage yet, but the engineering process itself is worth watching.
