Horror Studies Archive in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
entertainment
The University of Pittsburgh is home to something rare: the world's only academic center dedicated to studying horror. Founded in twenty nineteen, the Horror Studies Center grew from an unexpected gift when the family of director George Romero donated over one hundred boxes of manuscripts, letters, and production materials from his legendary zombie films, many of which were shot in Pittsburgh. But that was just the start. The collection now includes archives from The Blair Witch Project, over eighty boxes of papers from acclaimed author Stanley Wiater, scripts from Wes Craven and John Carpenter, and first editions by Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, and Bram Stoker. According to Atlas Obscura, the center has achieved national and global recognition as a thriving hub for horror scholarship.
