AI-amplified democratic backsliding: an exploration

Researchers at LessWrong developed an index to measure how vulnerable countries are to AI-amplified democratic backsliding. They identified five pathways: economic inequality from job displacement, synthetic propaganda polluting the information environment, elite fragmentation driven by winner-take-all capital concentration, state capacity eroding as AI outpaces regulation, and algorithmic polarization that feeds outrage online. Liberal democracies topped the rankings, with Denmark scoring highest, but they show a surprising weakness: polarization proved to be their structural liability. The researchers found that economic inequality and regulatory capacity gaps create the widest divides across nations. The index remains exploratory, but it suggests democratic resilience hinges less on which nations adopt AI than on which ones face preexisting economic stress, fractured elites, or degraded information environments.
