Rs115bn WB-funded rehabilitation project restructured quietly

politics

According to Dawn, Pakistan's World Bank-funded post-flood rehabilitation project in Balochistan has been quietly restructured, depriving over 134,000 verified flood-affected families of the resilient homes they were promised. The project steering committee capped the housing component at roughly 69,000 homes instead of the full target and redirected remaining funds toward roads and irrigation, reversing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's public commitment to rebuild a home for every family that lost one. The restructuring followed investigations into alleged record tampering and duplicate claims, though officials dispute whether those concerns justified scaling back the housing program. The World Bank subsequently dropped its proposed one hundred eighty million dollar additional financing.
