MIT researchers tackle the economic realities of fusion power

science

Fusion energy has passed its biggest hurdle: proving it works as physics. Now comes the tougher question—can it actually make money? MIT professors Dennis Whyte and Andrew Lo have just published a framework designed to answer that. According to MIT News, they developed ten parameters combining physics, engineering, and economics to determine whether a fusion power plant can generate more revenue than it costs. The key metric is what they call 'economic Q'—the ratio of capital returns to capital invested—which must exceed one for viability. The timing is crucial: venture capital is flooding into fusion startups like Commonwealth Fusion Systems, which just raised a billion dollars toward its first commercial plant in the 2030s.
