London still dominates Britain's datacenter map, but the regions are powering up

Britain's datacenter infrastructure still gravitates heavily toward London, which houses nearly 40 percent of the country's 555 server farms and commands two-thirds of its one point six gigawatts of compute capacity. But The Register reports a significant shift is underway, as developers look beyond the capital to escape power shortages and planning constraints. South East England is building out the second-largest expansion pipeline, with ten planned facilities, while Wales has emerged as a surprise regional powerhouse with one hundred fifty-four megawatts of capacity. The North West is attracting attention with five new projects in the pipeline, and even further north, Blackstone is planning a massive seven hundred twenty megawatt facility near Blyth in Northumberland—though OpenAI's Stargate datacenter project at Cobalt Park remains on hold, delayed by concerns over UK energy costs.
