Ivory Coast's Biama boom: TikTok trend gets the nation's youth dancing

Per France 24, a new music and dance genre called Biama is sweeping through Ivory Coast. Born about five years ago in Yopougon—the poorest yet liveliest neighborhood of Abidjan—Biama borrows many codes from coupé-décalé, but at a faster tempo. Unlike coupé-décalé, which is tied to trendy nightclubs, Biama thrives in the streets and on social media, making it far more accessible to the young, working-class audiences catching the trend on TikTok.
