Scoop: Cori Bush won't commit to voting for Jeffries in 2027 if she wins her seat back

politics

Former Representative Cori Bush, attempting to win back her Missouri House seat, told Axios today she won't commit to voting for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as speaker if Democrats take the majority in twenty twenty-seven. Bush joins dozens of progressive candidates who are similarly dodging the commitment, frustrated with Democratic leadership over policy on Gaza, housing, and other issues. However, even the most left-wing members of Congress expect Jeffries to become speaker anyway—mostly because nobody in the Democratic caucus would dare challenge him. Bush previously voted for Jeffries in speaker elections in twenty twenty-three, but now says she's focused on forcing her successor to deliver for St. Louis residents first.
