Argentine footballer detained in Miami by ICE to be held ‘at least another week’

Argentine footballer Matías Pourrain was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last Thursday before a flight to Los Angeles. The thirty-four-year-old has lived in the U.S. since twenty nineteen on a tourist visa and filed for residency, but because his application was never formally denied, ICE is using that bureaucratic gap to justify his detention. He's been transferred to Krome Detention Center in Florida, per Buenos Aires Herald. His lawyer says he qualifies for bail and expects a hearing by Tuesday or Wednesday, though Pourrain likely faces at least another week in custody. His case isn't isolated: Argentine nanny Iliana Lick was detained at Philadelphia Airport in July while traveling to a World Cup match, and remains in custody in New Mexico.
