Family Memories and Midwestern Niceties Converge in Melissa Joseph’s ‘Casserole Culture’

Artist Melissa Joseph channels family memories into needle-felted wool, as Colossal reports. Growing up biracial in rural Pennsylvania with an Irish mother and an Indian father from Kerala, she creates intricate scenes inspired by Midwestern life and domestic imagery. Following her mother's death in twenty twenty-four, Joseph has focused her practice on the objects and spaces that held her family's cherished moments rather than faces themselves, combining traditional fiber art with found industrial materials like salvaged wood and worn metal. Her forthcoming exhibition, titled 'Casserole Culture,' opens September ninth at Charles Moffett in New York and runs through October seventeenth.
