Sanctioned Russian tanker leaks oil off Oman after mystery explosion
world
Per Meduza, a sanctioned Russian tanker called the Caroline Bezengi has leaked oil off the coast of Oman. The ship is part of Russia's shadow fleet, used to carry oil in violation of Western sanctions imposed after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It ran aground in early June in the Arabian Sea, with an explosion believed to have occurred on board—though its cause remains unknown. Oman's Environment Authority reports the oil slick covers roughly three hundred ninety square kilometers, about one hundred fifty square miles, and lies roughly four miles from shore. This marks the first environmental damage Oman has reported from a sanctioned tanker spill.
