Congress' disappearing town halls

Congressional town halls—the traditional August ritual where lawmakers face constituents—are becoming rare. Axios reports that only eleven lawmakers have scheduled town halls for the rest of August, a sharp decline after many Republicans canceled events following angry crowds last year over spending cuts and proposed layoffs. Representative Mike Flood of Nebraska is among the few still holding them—three per year—though his attendance has dropped from around seven hundred fifty to between two hundred thirty-five and three hundred fifteen. Flood argues that despite heated moments making headlines, town halls remain essential for connecting with independent voters and genuine dialogue. The pattern echoes summer two thousand nine, when Democrats faced angry constituents at town halls protesting the Affordable Care Act, and subsequently suffered significant losses in the twenty ten midterm elections.
