Allahabad HC orders Rs 25 lakh compensation to sisters confined by father for converting to Islam

world

The Allahabad High Court has ordered a father and the Uttar Pradesh government to pay twenty-five lakh rupees to two sisters for unlawfully confining them. Scroll.in reports the women—aged twenty and thirty-five—had voluntarily converted to Islam and chosen to marry according to their own wishes, decisions their father opposed by confining them at home. In his judgment, Justice Sandeep Jain found the conversion was entirely voluntary and that, as adults, the sisters have a constitutional right to make decisions about faith and personal life. The court ruled their confinement violated their fundamental rights.
