The 4 July 2026 landslide disaster at Cantzama in Ecuador

A landslide in Ecuador's Zamora Chinchipe province killed nineteen people and destroyed or damaged around fifty homes on the fourth of July. Eos reports that satellite imagery from Planet Labs traced the disaster to a roughly one kilometer landslide that struck about thirteen kilometers upstream from the village of Cantzama, transforming into a long-running debris flow that picked up sediment as it swept downstream. Analysts note the same hillside had already suffered shallow failures during a heavy rainfall period roughly a year earlier, raising the possibility that it was destabilized ahead of the fatal slide. Officials are now weighing a proposal to relocate residents away from the channel and redesignate the site for tourism.
