US senators move to rebuke China over Tibet

politics

Per Semafor, US senators across party lines have introduced legislation aimed at pressing the Trump administration to seek observer status for Tibet's government in exile at the United Nations and to include it in other international organizations. The bipartisan bill, led by Oregonian Jeff Merkley and Idaho Republican James Risch, frames the Tibet-China dispute as strategically important to American interests and calls for the government to urge allies to engage with Tibet's leadership at senior diplomatic levels. Though the bill's future in Congress remains unclear, the timing could intensify friction with Beijing ahead of an expected visit by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to Washington next month.
