Former Syrian President Assad sentenced to death in absentia

A Syrian court has sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad and his brother to death in absentia, NPR reports, on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes. The verdict stems from Syria's fourteen-year conflict, which left roughly half a million people dead.
