When should you scrap your gasoline car? The answer is almost certainly now.

Anthropocene Magazine reports on new research examining a climate dilemma: should you drive your gas car until it dies, or replace it with an EV? Researchers at UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara have the answer—replace it now, even if it's brand new. Their analysis in Science found that swapping a gas car for an EV reduces overall carbon emissions in over ninety percent of scenarios, even after accounting for manufacturing emissions. It takes about three years of EV driving to offset the carbon from making the battery, and then electric vehicles pull decisively ahead. And as electricity grids decarbonize and battery recycling improves, the climate case for switching only strengthens.
