The IBM PC was unveiled forty-five years ago this week, a revolutionary machine whose basic architecture remains embedded in most computers today. As Semafor reports, IBM never turned a significant profit from it — competitors reverse-engineered the design and captured all the value. That computing era is the subject of Halt and Catch Fire, a twenty fourteen drama created by Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers and set in a fictional mainframe company. The series went largely unnoticed initially, but the Guardian later described it as compelling and addictive.
