New hurricane graphic helps people identify watch areas, doesn't change risk perception
science
Florida State University researchers have examined an experimental forecast graphic from the National Hurricane Center aimed at improving how people understand hurricane warnings. The new tool adds watches and warnings for inland tropical storms and hurricanes alongside the traditional track-forecast cone, which historically focused primarily on coastal areas. According to Phys.org, the study was motivated by a simple principle: hurricane warnings only work if people actually understand them.
