Trump admin cuts Medicaid funds for youth trans care
health
On Tuesday, the Trump administration finalized a rule to eliminate federal Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care—including hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and surgeries—for transgender youth. Beginning October thirteenth, states will lose federal funds for these services, though they can continue to use their own money. The administration cited a twenty twenty-five HHS report that found weak evidence for such treatments, but major medical groups including the American Medical Association say the policy misrepresents the medical consensus. LGBTQ+ advocates argue it amounts to a dangerous restriction on physician-prescribed care. Axios reports the administration acknowledged potential downstream costs in mental health crisis services but said the policy isn't aimed at saving money.
