When a Makita power tool battery stops charging, users typically have one option: toss it. But when one battery refused to charge despite appearing healthy, the Repair Forge decided to investigate—and discovered something fixable with a single twenty-cent part. Per Hackaday, using the open source PocketOBI tool they queried the battery's internal sensors and found the problem: a temperature-sensing thermistor had failed, causing one of two sensors to report a wildly incorrect negative thirty degrees Celsius. The fix was a ten-minute thermistor swap. A second battery revealed the same failure pattern, with a faulty sensor reading sixty-four degrees Celsius. It's a demonstration of repairability in action—open-source reverse-engineering and a cheap part turning e-waste back into working tools.
