MTG-I1 captures eclipse path of totality over Europe

The ESA's Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite captured a stunning view of a total solar eclipse over Europe. From its vantage point thirty-six thousand kilometers above Earth, MTG-I1 tracked the Moon's shadow as it swept over Greenland, Iceland, and the Iberian peninsula, merging with the advancing twilight as darkness fell. While the total eclipse lasted only a few minutes across mainland Europe, the partial eclipse was visible across a much wider area—spanning from northern Canada and the Nordic countries all the way to western Africa. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, and during those moments of totality, observers can see the Sun's corona, a brilliant halo of light surrounding the Moon's silhouette.
