Aftermath of an Intervention, Part II

Writing for Electric Literature, Nelly Reifler continues her essay series 'Blue Spark' with a second installment on the aftermath of her August twenty-five, two thousand one wedding, when her stepmother's sister Mahnaz was fatally injured in a car crash on the way to the ceremony. Reifler recounts how, days later, while still reeling from that loss, she learned a close friend, Billy Greene, had been shot and killed in Oakland. As she scrambled to book a flight west to mourn him, Electric Literature notes, she briefly held a reservation on United Flight 93 — the flight later hijacked on September eleventh, two thousand one.
