Trump's "communist" midterm message

According to Axios, President Trump is using warnings about communists and democratic socialists as a centerpiece of the GOP's midterm campaign strategy. Speaking Friday at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's annual conference, Trump told religious conservatives the Democratic Party is being taken over by communists intent on destroying the traditional American way of life. He joked he'd be the 'greatest communist in history' by offering free rent and food, warning the country would collapse within two to three years. Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed confirmed this was intentional—and is the message Republicans plan to emphasize. But the strategy reveals an underlying problem: Republicans face an eleven-to-fourteen-point enthusiasm gap with Democrats, a deficit Reed called a 'three-alarm fire.' In other words, Trump's anti-communist message is partly an attempt to solve Republicans' real crisis—voter motivation.
