Northeast Indian Literature That Interrogates the Nation

Writer Aruni Kashyap, in a piece for Electric Literature, argues that literature from India's Northeast does more than depict the region's long insurgencies — it challenges conventional ideas of the Indian nation itself. Kashyap's list spans Temsula Ao's Naga story collection These Hills Called Home, Siddhartha Deb's journalist novel An Outline of the Republic, and Bijoya Sawian's Shadow Men, set amid Meghalaya's matrilineal society and ethnic tensions. Also featured are Jahnavi Barua's Rebirth, Easterine Kire's Bitter Wormwood, and Prajwal Parajuly's The Land Where I Flee, each grappling with displacement, insurgency, and questions of self-determination. As Kashyap tells it, these works succeeded in capturing something true where mainstream Indian Writing in English fell short.
