U.S. launches fresh strikes in retaliation for Iranian attack on tanker

world

The U.S. military is conducting fresh strikes against Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Axios. It's the second wave of retaliation in twenty-four hours, following an Iranian drone attack on a commercial tanker carrying over two million barrels of crude oil early Saturday. The Iranian strike came just hours after U.S. forces had already struck Iranian positions in response to an earlier attack on Thursday. In between, Iran retaliated against those initial strikes by attacking targets in Bahrain. U.S. Central Command says Saturday's strikes targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communications systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities. The escalating cycle threatens the shaky U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding and raises tensions in one of the world's most critical shipping lanes.
