More On Wave Overhangs for 3D Printing
tech
Per Hackaday, researchers are refining a new three-D printing technique called wave overhangs—a way to print horizontal overhangs without support material. The slicer grows the overhang from the main model itself; imagine printing a T-shape vertically and having the arms extend from the stem with a slight overlap. The technique improves on arc overhangs by replacing arcs with wave patterns that diffract around corners and holes, like ripples in a pond. The downside: early tests show some increased warping. The method is available for experimentation in a fork of Orca, the open-source slicer.
