NASA Challenge Tests Wheel Designs for Moon Base Mobility

science

NASA News is reporting on a global competition to design wheels for lunar rovers. Five teams from forty-nine countries participated in the Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge, testing their prototypes at Johnson Space Center on July thirty-first. The winner, Scotch Pad Tyres, features an aluminum hub wrapped in a Nomex tire with a specially treated surface for traction—a design that flexes with terrain while maintaining its shape. As NASA plans to establish the Moon Base, every kilometer of reliable rover travel matters; it expands how far crews can explore and what science they can achieve.
