Remains of people exhibited in ‘human zoos’ to be returned to French Guiana

world

According to RFI, France has approved legislation to return the remains of Indigenous Kali'na and Arawak peoples to French Guiana. In eighteen ninety-two, around thirty men, women, and children were taken to Paris for display in 'human zoos' — exploitative colonial exhibitions. Six did not survive the winter. Today's approval represents a long-fought victory by their descendants, restoring these remains to their homeland after over one hundred fifty years.
