Jason Arday’s death: Black academics need to feel they belong in higher education
other
Professor Jason Arday was found dead on August 14th, twenty twenty-six, days after resigning from the University of Cambridge amid plagiarism accusations. The Conversation reports that his death has left many Black academics reflecting on whether they truly belong in UK higher education, noting that only around one percent of UK professors are Black. The piece points to Aspire, a mentoring program that has supported fifty-nine Black and mixed-Black scholars across three cohorts, fifteen of whom went on to fully-funded PhDs, as evidence that belonging and mentorship, not just access, shape whether scholars stay in academia. The author, a senior lecturer who worked with Arday through the program, argues universities should deepen their commitment to equality and diversity initiatives rather than retreat from them amid funding pressures and growing scrutiny.
