John Irvin, the British director behind the Bafta-winning BBC series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, has died at eighty-six. The Guardian reports he passed away peacefully at home on August eleventh, surrounded by his family, as confirmed by his producer, Claire Evans. Irvin's TV success opened the door to Hollywood, where he went on to direct war drama Hamburger Hill, along with The Dogs of War and Raw Deal.
