After Supreme Court setback, Trump again targets immigration by expanding definition of birthright citizenship

politics

Published on Wednesday, The Conversation (US) notes that President Trump has issued two new executive orders aimed at narrowing birthright citizenship, targeting children of foreign‑government employees and what the administration calls "birth tourism." The orders sidestep the Supreme Court’s June ruling, which affirmed citizenship for children born on U.S. soil regardless of their parents' status, by invoking authority under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller cited that law as the legal basis, arguing the measures protect national security and the integrity of the immigration system. Scholars warn that the strategy could shift the definition of citizenship toward labeling parents, leaving the Court’s decision largely untouched.
