Orange lips and roaring calls: Meet the DRC's shy new rainforest monkey
science
Phys.org reports that a new rainforest monkey species, dubbed Likweli for its orange lips, has been documented in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The animal, seen by locals only a few times since two thousand eight, was confirmed after doctoral student Junior Amboko and an international team spent years traversing the forest on foot and by canoe, collecting photographs, audio recordings, genetic and anatomical evidence. The discovery makes Likweli one of just five African monkey species described as new to science in the past seventy‑five years, according to Phys.org.
