Progressive Aisha Wahab wins California special election to fill Eric Swalwell seat

The Guardian reports that progressive state senator Aisha Wahab has won the California special election to succeed Eric Swalwell in the United States House. Wahab defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez after a contentious intra‑party contest, and she will take the East Bay seat vacated when Swalwell resigned in April amid sexual‑misconduct claims that he denies. Party leaders, Our Revolution, labor unions, local officials and Attorney General Rob Bonta all backed Wahab, who was widely seen as the frontrunner.
