CalMatters reports that a California appeals court has appointed a judge to consider whether to sanction Nevada County's district attorney after generative AI added mistakes to court documents in four criminal cases. The move follows a sworn declaration from former prosecutor Madison Maxwell, who said her supervisor refused to let her immediately report the errors to the court and defense lawyers. Maxwell also said the office had no policy or training for AI use, and that she didn't know the technology could invent citations. The state Supreme Court had earlier asked for a deeper investigation into the alleged misconduct.
