Google puts $500,000 behind Pakistan’s digital safety push

tech

Google has pledged five hundred thousand dollars through its Google.org arm to back a new digital‑safety drive in Pakistan, called Digital Pasban, which will deliver Urdu‑language toolkits, videos and parental workshops to two hundred thousand households. The funding coincides with the opening of Google's first local office in Karachi, a step the company says signals a long‑term business presence in the country. In partnership with the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, the programme will also run child‑safety workshops and help address the roughly five hundred daily complaints the regulator receives about inappropriate online content. Google’s public‑policy vice‑president Wilson White said the goal is to move families from digital anxiety to confidence, while PTA chairman Hafeezur Rehman stressed the need for strong enforcement alongside preventive safeguards. Dawn reports that the initiative aims to build healthier online habits for both children and adults across the nation.
